Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

Seventeen year old Ruby has spent her entire life moving from place to place with her alcoholic mother. She has learned that it is easier to put up walls than it is to let people in and trust them. When Ruby’s mother leaves the house one day and never comes home, Ruby is sent to live with her sister (whom she hasn’t spoken to in years) and her brother-in-law. Ruby goes from living a crappy life to living in an upscale neighborhood. Still, Ruby can’t seem to let her guard down and let people in.

Then, one night Ruby meets Nate-the cute, friendly neighbor who always seems to be around when she needs help. As their relationship begins to develop, she must confront her own fears and insecurities and soon learns that the two of them have more in common than she thought.
